I'd gladly help out in any way! There must be some way to have a natural gathering in a foreign language. With all of our creative geniuses and desire for our children to have a holistic awesome learning experience, if we put our heads together, I think we could come up with something...
Hello! What I do with my kids is just introduce vocabulary based on our activities for the day. This would be quite easy to do in a playdate or outing setting and yes.. it would be somewhat contrived but most foreign language learning is. I would probably aim to target 10-20 words and 2 to 3 phrases that might come in handy for the outing and encourage the kids to speak the French whenever referring to those things. When I say target, I would probably give a mini lesson ideally with something like a picture dictionary as well as provide cheat sheets for the older kids to refer to. I would also likely throw in a sentence first in French and then repeat it in English periodically too so that they are hearing the tones etc.. If someone wanted to partner with me on this who has a little more time to do the cheat sheets...ooohh that would be nice.... Ok...so not exactly worked out, but a jumping off place anyways..
Um ... nope. I'll have to think about that. I don't have a vision for a gathering that wouldn't be awkward or contrived. I would want to aim for something authentic but I'm not sure I have it in me to do that right now. Just being honest.
Lisa has mentioned something before perhaps she has some great ideas.
So, while I was at The Learning House, I picked up Ecoutez! Parlez! Thank for the tip Wendy.
I've also been thinking it would be great to somehow get together as a group of french learners to have some conversational interaction in french. Wendy or Lisa (given your bilingualism) have you ever envisioned leading a time like this?
As my kids were working on their languages this morning I was thinking about some of the differences between the programs I chose (between Mandarin and French).
I really like the multi-media approach with the Mandarin program. Henry isn't available to practice with them much so they need the variety of interaction besides listen and repeat. The mandarin program has stories related to the learning lesson as well as activities and games - all online. I didn't like this at first as I was trying to stay away from much computer time but I'm now seeing the benefit because I wasn't able to help them with their workbook since I wasn't following along with them and cannot speak mandarin myself. The online program supports the learning with correction. They can even record their voices and listen to how they say the phrases compared to how the 'teacher' says it. Pretty neat! I landed on the Mandarin program because there simply wasn't much choice and this was the only one that was learning through story instead of a list of vocabulary. We all love it!
The other option for French which is very Charlotte Mason-ish is to hire a tutor. I think I would do this for a language we don't speak in our home - we do it for music which is essentially a language! I imagine there would be lots of option out there for French. Even a call to the French Department at UWO may come up with someone. Or a post on a board. Ideas …. ideas!
Thanks for all of this info. It is very helpful. I will jump into my research with more awareness and options. It's on the top of my weekend list of "to do's"!
The series I'm referring to is published by Dominique et Compagnie - a Quebecois company. : ) At this point we're using La Collection A Pas de Souris Rouge. There is also A Pas de Souris Verte and A Pas de Souris Bleue which we'll get to eventually. I'm keeping myself from buying them at the moment because I'm not having a problem getting them from the library but should that change they'll find a home on our bookshelf. I also found a publisher called Les Petits Mijades that has some lovely, simple books too - family friendly, not strange imaging. The library doesn't have as many from them (they're Belgian) but the ones they have we've enjoyed.
Hi Wendy. Would love to hear more about the readers you are referring to. There is also a program at the library called Mango Languages that is free and is available in many languages and in various formats. We also are coming at this from a bilingual background. I agree that the application factor is huge and that the more opportunities you have to use them in context the better. For my young ones we are favouring sticker vocabulary book as they really enjoy finding the stickers and posting them and it comes with an inherent fun aspect that actually has made this Joshua's favorite go to book.. Yes, my two year old chooses a French vocabulary sticker book over every other book on our shelves. And it is really just soooo very cute to hear what the words sound like one he puts his own twist on them.
We are up for incorporating French in playdates too so let us know and we are happy to oblige and introduce a small assortment of new words appropriate to the outing.
As a caveat ... I am bilingual so my research was through that lens. When I was researching Mandarin language materials ... it was quite a different type of thing!
I looked into 3 programs for our crew (Rosetta Stone, Ecoutez!Parlez! and Le Francais Facile). For us I was looking for something that was story based and not vocabulary based. My perspective is that vocabulary without context is pretty meaningless. I wanted something that moved at a good pace and didn't have a lot of busy work.
We settled on Le Francais Facile. We are using the Junior program. I wasn't charmed at first. It has grown on us and the kids enjoy it. We use only the audio. The kids (using headphones - it's an independent activity) listen to the story and repeat the vocabulary. They do this three different times before moving on to the next lesson. There are plenty of activity ideas that come with it ... just not for me. Instead I have supplemented with a fabulous series of French language beginner readers from the library - I have several out for the kids to look at and read one several times in a week. There is also a video language program that we have really enjoyed called Bonjour Les Amis - also from the library.
We would like to start teaching our children french. Can you remind me of curriculum choices you like, are familiar with, have had success with, etc... so we can start researching...
