No all things go well Deb - for sure. BUT today my son asked if he was ALLOWED to read an extra chapter. My daughter summed up my reaction well when she said "wait until I get a video camera and then say that again"! I'll give Him thanks for every victory!
Thanks Deb - we did find a PBS special on line that I watched with the kids. I totally understand what you mean "newday" as I am not a big history buff.... so we ended up doing the video, reading a kids novel to travel back in time, we looked at kids discovery book and 2 other non fiction books that has lots of facts & pictures in them. This was all in anticipation of the events at Fort Malden for their 200th anniversary celebrations. It was incredible. I think for every future destinaion family event (aka field trip), I will do a series of reading lessons ahead of time. So I would call our first history unit a sucess! Makes me not so nervious about starting the middle ages tomorrow!
Last year my husband rented movies on the War of 1812 and we all watched them together, took several days as we had to break watching time up as they can be lengthy. Sometimes watching a video can be of help. Often times too there are little clips on youtube of different events in History, excellent resource as well.
The London Public Library has a series by Pierre Burton that we have read aloud with our 7 year old son. It is the true historical account, in a short novel format, I think 5 or 6 books in this series, though I believe that the library is missing the first one.
These tellings did not grip me; however, my son really enjoyed them. This may be my issue, not the books' issue, as History books have not, to date, brought me great enjoyment, ever. ;)
Some of the titles are: The Death of Isaac Brock, The Battle of Lake Erie, Attack on Montreal, Canada Under Seige.
Ah, here it is on amazon, in one large book format. http://www.amazon.ca/The-Battles-1812-Pierre-Berton/dp/1897252013
