My crew love all of them! We've listened several times to: The Basket of Flowers, Sir Malcolm and the Missing Prince and Charlie's Choice because we own them, but also, have borrowed several others and love them too!
I had shied away from Jim Weiss' stuff because of the number of mythology and folktale stories he produces ... a sign of the values he holds. The Story of the World seemed to not be a living book but I too have friends who love it.
I remembered that Focus on the Family also has radio theatre as well as Adventures in Odyssey. Or Jonathan Park series. Anybody tried those?
As for Lamplighter, we purchased the 3 audio seasons as digital downloads when there was the 7 for $7 offer in the summer. The kids have listened to Basket of Flowers. Henry and I listened to The Boy From Mount Righi last night. That one we'll hold on to for a while. Although redemptive, I think our kids may be disturbed by the father/son interactions at the moment. Which ones have you liked?
I have been cautiond about The Story of the World series because they do not come from a Christian Perspective. I'm not sure myself, having never read them, but that caution, along with TruthQuests comment that Joanne quoted have been red flags to me over the years. I know a lot of Christians use them and love them, while others have listened and feel God is void from having a role in history at all.
We have listened to a couple of Jim Weiss' audio CD's. One called Tall Tales, which after listening to myself and then explaining to the children what a Tall Tale was, I thought "why do I need to share these kinds of stories with my children at a young age?". So, we didn't. We did listen to the Old Testament Tales. However, we did not like his artistic interpretation of the stories, which rendered them inaccurate from the Bible. I didn't want the kids memorizing Weiss' version from innocently listening to it over and over and then being surprised by the truth in the Bible! If I remember correctly, Weiss also presents it in a way that implies it is a tale that some people believe and could or could not be true. I didn't like that element of doubt that is subtly woven throughout. That's when we decided to just get the Bible on CD (we enjoy The Word of Promise Audio Bible) which is the NKJV dramatized with voices, background music, and sound effects, to the pure scriptures.
Which Lamplighter did the children just listen to? We received a couple of new ones for Christmas, that we are looking forward to listening to. I am more than happy to share the Lamplighter CD's we have. I can bring them to our next gathering if you or others would like some more to listen to.
Wendy - I have never seen Susan Wise Bauer's book (I am not avoiding it, just haven't seen it yet), but here's the reference to it in Truthquest History: "Some families enjoy this book's scope, and ask us to cite; others concerned about world view, so parental discretion". (Taken from Truthquest Middle Ages, point # 4 of Housekeeping Details. I too am interested if other's have used it. I am so glad that you are enjoying lamplighter. We love it too!
